Salt Spring Island Company Wins Prestigious ECOSTAR Award for Zero-Waste Water Filter
January 4, 2026

Salt Spring Island–based Wise Hawk Environmental Ltd. has received a 2025 ECOSTAR Award for developing a zero-waste, plastic-free water filtration system designed to purify, mineralize, and naturally balance drinking water.

The award recognizes the company’s innovative approach to water filtration without disposable plastic cartridges. Instead, the filter uses exceptionally pure activated charcoal, inspired by the innovations of Japanese charcoal masters of the 16th century and refined using modern materials science through a proprietary, patent-pending process. The system reduces chlorine and other modern contaminants, improves taste, and is paired with natural mineralizing stone—resulting in clean, smooth-tasting water often compared to natural spring water.

Unlike conventional filters, the system is fully plastic-free, reusable, and zero-waste at end of life, with materials housed in reusable glass or stainless-steel containers and packaged without plastic.

“As an environmental chemist, my focus has always been on developing and refining nature-based materials to solve modern-day challenges,” said founder Michael McCormick. “This award reflects the idea that effective water filtration doesn’t have to rely on disposable plastic cartridges.”

The ECOSTAR Award places Wise Hawk Environmental among a small group of BC businesses recognized for leadership in sustainability and waste reduction.
